02 Custom Software Development

Custom software development for small and midsize businesses.

Software built around the way your business works, by experienced developers who use AI tools in the process and stand behind every line.

Updated

Who this is for

Built for businesses like these.

  • Businesses running on spreadsheets and email that need a proper internal tool.
  • Companies whose off-the-shelf software almost fits and needs an integration or extension to close the gap.
  • Teams that need a customer-facing application built and maintained by people who will still be there next year.
  • Businesses that want the speed of AI-assisted development without giving up code review and testing.

The problem

Why this work matters.

AI tools have changed how software gets written. Used well, they let a small experienced team deliver more, faster. Used carelessly, they produce code nobody understands, with bugs nobody catches until production.

Our developers use AI tools in the parts of the work where they help: scaffolding, tests, documentation, and routine changes. Every change is reviewed by an experienced developer, covered by tests, and maintained after launch. The finished application may contain AI features or none at all. That is a product decision, not a delivery method.

What you get

Defined deliverables, not open-ended advice.

Working software

An application, internal tool, or integration built to your workflow, deployed to an environment you control.

Tests and review

Automated tests and a review record for every change, including the changes an AI tool helped write.

Documentation

Architecture, decisions, and operating instructions, written so a future developer can pick it up.

Maintenance plan

An agreed plan for updates, dependencies, and support after launch.

How an engagement runs

Assess, define, deliver and verify.

  1. 01

    Assess

We understand the business problem, the systems you have, and the people who will use the software.

  2. 02

    Define

We agree the deliverable, scope, responsibilities, success measures, the tooling we will use, and how AI-generated code is reviewed.

  3. 03

    Deliver and verify

We build in short, visible increments, test continuously, document decisions, and hand over software your team can operate.

Where we draw the line

We describe delivery benefits with evidence from the engagement, not a blanket speed or cost claim.

We do not ship AI-generated code without review and tests. If a deadline would require that, we will say so and adjust the scope instead.

Riparian: an engineering workspace for hardware teams, with an AI co-worker built in

Context
Riparian is a subscription workspace for small and midsize hardware teams that ship printed circuit boards. It sits around the EDA tool rather than replacing it, and connects design reviews, tasks, bills of materials, documentation, and an AI assistant to the actual board data.
Challenge
Hardware teams run reviews over email and spreadsheets because a full PLM system costs too much. The product had to read IPC-2581 board files natively, render boards in 2D and 3D in the browser with no plugins, and let an AI assistant work on real board data without ever acting outside a user’s permissions.
What we did
We designed and built the application: in-browser 2D and 3D viewers for IPC-2581 files with layer control and net tracing, design reviews pinned to pads and nets with approvals, a BOM built from board data with a vendor list and diff review, versioned release packages, and Cowork, an LLM assistant that runs design-rule reviews and proposes edits to tasks, BOM lines, and wiki pages. Every AI change is scoped to the user’s permissions, labeled, logged, and approved by a person before it lands.
Result
Riparian is live as a paid product with a free trial, row-level security in the database, private org-scoped storage, two-factor authentication, and AI models that are not trained on customer data. The screens below are from the product.

FAQ

Questions about custom software development.

How is AI-generated code reviewed?

The same way any code is reviewed, plus one rule: an experienced developer reads and understands every change before it is merged, and the tests have to pass. Which tools are used, and what code they may see, is agreed in the Define step.

Will we own the code?

Yes. The source, the deployment, and the documentation are handed over to you.

Do you maintain the software after launch?

Yes, under an agreed maintenance plan. We also document everything so you are free to bring it in-house or to another team.
